Fugro Advances Safe Offshore Development of Sabah's Geohazard Survey with Ultra-Deepwater AUV Technology

Fugro's wholly owned and operated survey vessel, Fugro Equator, is 65 meters long and purpose-built for offshore subsea surveys and deepwater geo-data mapping.

Fugro (輝固) has completed a geohazard site survey commissioned by PETRONAS Carigali (馬來西亞國家石油公司) for the Megah and Limbayong fields off Sabah, East Malaysia. The survey delivered high-resolution Geo-data on seabed and shallow subsurface conditions, supporting geohazard assessment, engineering design and field development planning in the challenging ultra-deepwater environment.

The project marked the deployment of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) technology for PETRONAS Carigali's ultra-deepwater geohazard assessment. Fugro's Echo Surveyor 8 AUV was deployed from its wholly owned and operated survey vessel, Fugro Equator (輝固赤道號), to acquire bathymetric, geophysical and shallow subsurface data close to the seabed. The campaign began in June 2026 and was completed in August, with Fugro's Kuala Lumpur Remote Operations Centre (KLROC) providing continuous data quality control and processing.

Safri Drahman, Regional Business Line Director, Marine Site Characterisation APAC at Fugro, said the collaboration with PETRONAS Carigali demonstrates how advanced technologies and real-time remote operations can deliver faster insights and more efficient offshore project execution.
