|Sumitomo Completes 27-kilometer Subsea Interconnector in the Philippines
Japan-based #SumitomoElectricIndustries has completed a 27-kilometer high-voltage submarine power cable project in the #Philippines, connecting #Cebu and #Bohol islands. The 230 kV AC submarine cable, with a 1,200 MW capacity, addresses Bohol Island's increasing power demands due to surging tourism and enhances the region's power grid reliability. The project, commissioned by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) , was successfully completed on schedule despite challenging deep-sea conditions.
Kazuhira Harada, Executive Officer of Sumitomo Electric, emphasized the company's commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure and promoting sustainable energy supply in the Philippines. Meanwhile, Sumitomo is also building the UK's first HVDC cable factory at the Port of Nigg, with commissioning planned for 2026.
|JERA to Lead the 615 MW Offshore Wind Project Announced in Aomori Prefecture
JERA Co. has been selected to develop a 615 MW offshore wind project in the Sea of Japan near Aomori Prefecture. As one of Japan's largest, it will be undertaken by a consortium including JERA, Tohoku Electric Power Co., and Green Power Investment (GPI), jointly owned with NTT Anode Energy. This marks JERA's third major offshore wind initiative, following the Ishikari Bay site launched earlier this year and Katagami Bay currently under development, solidifying its leadership in Japan's offshore wind sector.
|Kansai Electric Power Joins Iberdrola's Windanker Offshore Wind Project
Iberdrola has partnered with Japan's Kansai Electric Power on its #Windanker #offshorewind project in the German Baltic Sea, with Kansai acquiring a 49% stake while Iberdrola retains control at 51%. The 315 MW wind farm, valued at 1.28 billion euros, is set to begin operations in late 2026 and has already secured long-term contracts for its entire production. This agreement strengthens ties between the companies, building on Kansai's stake in Electricity North West (ENW), partly owned by Iberdrola. The collaboration supports Iberdrol's growth strategy in high-credit-quality markets while ensuring financial stability. Iberdrola will oversee construction, operation, and maintenance of the wind farm, which features 21 turbines with 15 MW capacity each.
