President Lai Meets Brookings Institution Delegation, Calling for Deeper Taiwan-U.S. Cooperation in AI and Technology Security

President Ching-Te Lai met with a delegation from the Brookings Institution (布魯金斯研究院) on Aug. 5, expressing appreciation for the institution's long-standing attention to Taiwan and its efforts in promoting mutual understanding between Taiwan and the United States. President Lai welcomed the delegation, led by Ryan Hass (何瑞恩), Director of the Brookings Institution's Center for East Asia Policy Studies, noting that Hass has visited Taiwan annually for five consecutive years since the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the delegation's research and insights serve as an important bridge for strengthening Taiwan-U.S. understanding.

President Lai said that 2026 marks both the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and the 30th anniversary of Taiwan's first direct presidential election. He highlighted the successful conclusion of the sixth Taiwan-U.S. Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue earlier this year and the signing of the "Silicon Prosperity Declaration" and the joint statement on Taiwan-U.S. economic security cooperation, which laid a solid foundation for semiconductor and high-tech collaboration.

President Lai emphasized that Taiwan is actively advancing its vision of becoming an "AI Island" by promoting AI adoption across industries and strengthening development in key technologies including silicon photonics, quantum technology and robotics. He added that Taiwan and the U.S. have significant opportunities to expand cooperation in AI supply chains, digital infrastructure and high-tech talent development. Taiwan also aims to become a regional hub for drone innovation and will promote related industrial programs and defense investments to establish a non-Red drone supply chain with the U.S.

President Lai stressed that Taiwan, located on the front line of the global democratic community, remains committed to safeguarding sovereignty, democracy and freedom while enhancing self-defense capabilities and maintaining regional peace and stability. Facing challenges including authoritarian expansion, global supply chain restructuring and the AI transformation, Lai said Taiwan hopes to deepen partnerships with the U.S. across various fields. Hass said the Brookings delegation's annual visit reflects the institution's long-term commitment to Taiwan-U.S. relations, which are built on shared interests, democratic values and mutual respect, and expressed hope that the visit would further strengthen bilateral ties and jointly safeguard peace and stability.
