Following the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale that occurred at 7:58 a.m. today (April 3rd), Taipower promptly established a response center to swiftly assess the condition of the power grid. As of 11:30 a.m. today, reports indicate a total of 354,534 power outages across Taiwan. Subsequently, restoration efforts have successfully reinstated power to over 90 percent of affected households, approximately totaling 342,968 residences. However, approximately 11,566 households remain without power at present.

Taipower has highlighted that despite the initial disruption caused by the earthquake, resulting in a decrease of approximately 3.2 million kW in power supply capacity, the power system remained stable and did not trigger the low-frequency offloading mechanism. Affected power supply units encompass one unit of the Kuokuang Power Plant, two units of the Heping Power Plant, two gas turbines of the Haihu Power Plant, as well as units No. 8 and No. 10 of the Taichung Power Plant, and the steam turbine of unit No. 5 at the Tongxiao Power Plant. Furthermore, operations at the nuclear power plant are reported to be normal.

Taipower has clarified that the power plants are conducting urgent inspections of pertinent equipment and will resume parallel power generation once the safety of said equipment is confirmed. Notably, the No. 5 unit of the Tongxiao Power Plant, the first unit of Guoguang, and both units of Haihu have been restored to normal operations. Efforts are underway to actively repair other affected units.
