Swiss researchers led by Mostafa Kiani Shahvandi from Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH) report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (PNAS) that climate change is causing Earth's days to lengthen slightly. The melting of polar ice and its flow into the oceans are altering mass distribution across the planet, slowing down Earth's rotation.

Due to stable sales in its ship and specialized special vessel sectors, SK oceanplant has advanced the increase of offshore wind power-related orders. Starting in the 2nd half of the year, SK oceanplant will begin delivering orders for Taiwan offshore wind projects, with expected growth in performance. According to SK oceanplant, consolidated sales for the second quarter of 2024 are estimated at 218.4 billion KRW, with an operating profit of 13.7 billion KRW, reflecting decreases of 15.3% and 54.4%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

On the 15th, the Ministry of Economic Affairs published the "2023 National Electricity Supply and Demand Report," which details the power supply situation for the year. The report takes into account various influencing factors and energy-saving measures while outlining electricity demand and construction plans for the next ten years (2024–2033). It anticipates a growth in electricity demand of approximately 12–13% by 2030. To meet the increasing demands of the AI industry, immediate construction of new units, upgrades to the power grid (substations), and energy storage systems are required to ensure stable power supply, along with a call for societal support for the development of related power facilities.

Norway seeks to bolster its partnership with Indonesia and explore investment opportunities in renewable energy sectors, specifically hydropower and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland expressed optimism following a meeting with Indonesian Energy Minister Arifin Tasrif in Jakarta earlier this month, acknowledging challenges while underscoring the potential for enhanced collaboration. Norway intends to utilize its expertise in hydropower and carbon capture to aid Indonesia in reducing carbon emissions. Since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Norway has emerged as Europe's largest supplier of natural gas and continues to be a leading producer of oil and gas in Western Europe. Norway's inaugural CCS project, "Northern Lights," is slated to commence storage operations next May, following the completion of capacity preparations this year.

China Steel Corporation (CSC) plans to invest NT$1.55 billion over the 5-year period from 2022 to 2026 to enhance the resilience of its entire power system. This includes efforts to increase the proportion of renewable energy, establish energy storage facilities, develop a microgrid within the plant, strengthen the resilience of power generation units, and apply AI smart modules for electricity management. The initiatives completed to date have not only reduced costs by NT$32.15 million annually but also significantly improved the robustness and reliability of various key power subsystems throughout the plant.
