Taiwan's Onshore Wind Potential: Embracing Community Participation and Renewable Energy

|Managing Director Enercon Taiwan Ltd., Bart Linssen

Bart Linssen, the Managing Director Enercon Taiwan Ltd., shed light on the challenges faced by #onshorewind energy in Taiwan. Linssen identified negative public perceptions and media influence as significant factors hindering the progress of onshore wind projects. Concerns about low-frequency noise and safety issues, including reports of oil leakage from wind turbines, have raised further doubts among the public.

However, Linssen reassured that solutions to these challenges exist by selecting the appropriate turbine design, emphasizing that Enercon turbines, IEC class-1 turbines, for instance, do not use oil, mitigating the risk of pollution and ensuring safety and reliability. Linssen stressed the significance of turbine type selection, considering Taiwan's susceptibility to typhoons and earthquakes.

Linssen emphasized the company's commitment to excellent maintenance services, providing all-inclusive service agreements to customers. Enercon guarantees 97% availability and takes responsibility for all repairs and maintenance tasks, exemplified by the successful operation of their first turbine installed in Penghu 20 years ago, with no incidents to date.

"Noise is a very subjective thing." Linssen said.

Addressing concerns related to noise, Linssen shared a unique experience where he recorded a running turbine during stormy weather outside his German office. Despite the turbine operating at full power, the recording captured only the ambient sounds of mouse clicks and keyboard typing from his colleagues.

"Actually, if you objectively listen to the noise of wind turbines, it's not that high. I encourage people to go to a wind farm and listen for themselves."

Linssen revealed ongoing progress in establishing a community wind project on the island of #Penghu, expressing optimism for its successful announcement in the near future. He expressed hopes that this pioneering initiative would inspire numerous followers, creating a transformative model for onshore wind development in Taiwan.
