Energy Security and Self-Sourcing of Energy are greater than it has been in the past

|Jose Oriol Hoyos, Offshore APAC Director of Iberdrola

Jose Oriol Hoyos, the current Offshore APAC Director at Iberdrola, has been serving the company for over 25 years. With a history spanning over 170 years, Iberdrola is dedicated to providing reliable energy solutions to more than 100 million customers from over 30 countries worldwide, including approximately 100,000 industrial customers and a majority of domestic customers.

Jose has personally been involved in most of Iberdrola's international expansions, primarily focused on the renewable energy sector, spanning across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and now the Asia Pacific region.

"I've worked in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and now in Asia, trying to develop renewable energy. The biggest strength of Iberdrola is we provide customers energy solutions fitted to their needs.” said Jose.

Over the past two decades, Iberdrola has been committed to renewable energy development, particularly focusing on offshore wind in the last decade. Taiwan possesses favorable conditions for offshore wind development, including its unique geographical location and abundant wind resources. However, the controllability and predictability of regulations and policies are crucial for offshore wind development:

"It takes a long time, approximately ten years to develop an offshore wind farm. We hope that the adjustments that we were commenting on in the panel are also implemented in order to continue being predictable in the law." Jose expressed.

“The world will start to look at energy security and self-sourcing of energy a great, a much greater deal than it has been in the past. But renewables don't come alone, they need to come with the expansion of the grid; the electricity market has to be expanded in extending and reinforcing the grid.”Jose emphasized. Regarding Taiwan's inherent favorable conditions for offshore wind development, Iberdrola maintains a positive attitude. However, adjustments are still needed in the current environment. Iberdrola plans to complete its financing plans in the next 2-3 years, with its decisions expected to have an impact in the following 4-5 years. Jose hopes that the government will listen to objective opinions and respond accordingly to ensure sustainability and adequate supply in the energy market.

“The world is coming closer to what we think. We would like to see adjustments; we would like to see governments that listen and governments that react in favor of sustainability and energy sufficiency with the markets.” said Jose.
