The U.S. government has ordered Ørsted, the Danish energy company, to suspend work on its offshore wind project, Revolution Wind, citing national security concerns. The directive, issued by the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on August 22, affects one of the most advanced offshore wind developments in the country.
Construction of Revolution Wind, a joint venture with Skyborn Renewables, began last year after receiving final federal approval. The project is reported to be 80% complete, with 45 of its planned 65 turbines already installed.
In a letter, BOEM Acting Director Matthew Giacona stated that the suspension is necessary to address "concerns related to the protection of national security interests of the U.S. and prevention of interference with reasonable uses of the exclusive economic zone, the high seas and the territorial seas." The pause underscores the growing tension between renewable energy expansion and national security priorities, raising uncertainty over the timeline for completing one of the East Coast's key clean energy projects.
