EDF Renewables Leads "Wei Lan Hai Miaoli Offshore Wind Project" Passing EIA Review
The "Wei Lan Hai Miaoli Offshore Wind Project" (also known as "Miaoli Offshore Wind Project 1," hereinafter referred to as the "Wei Lan Hai Miaoli Project"), led by EDF Renewables, officially passed the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) review today (15).
Located in the offshore area of Zhunan Township, Miaoli County, the Wei Lan Hai Miaoli Project covers an area of approximately 146 square kilometers. The closest offshore distance is approximately 22 kilometers, and water depths range from 60 to 85 meters. The wind farm will deploy floating-type or fixed-bottom wind turbine units with a total installed capacity of up to 1.36 GW.
In future planning, the Wei Lan Hai Miaoli Project commits to avoiding set net fishing grounds with its exported submarine cable routes to preserve local fisheries resources. During pile driving construction, construction vessels will be equipped with at least 2 acoustic monitoring personnel and 4 cetacean observers to continuously detect cetacean activity in the vicinity. Cetacean observation will be carried out throughout the export cable laying period. Taiwan conservation experts for the Leopard Cat, a protected species, will also be invited to conduct a rolling review of construction measures during onshore construction to protect local Leopard Cats and their habitats. With the EIA review passed, the Wei Lan Hai Miaoli Project will deploy two technical devices, Floating LiDAR, and Weather Buoy, at the site by the end of May to collect marine meteorological data.
Ming Lung-Chang, General Manager of EDF Renewable Taiwan, stated: "The 'Provence Grand Large,' France's first floating wind farm, which is about to be commercially converted, is jointly developed by EDF Renewables and its partners. We have gained and accumulated rich experience in floating wind farm development, and we hope to apply this valuable experience to the Wei Lan Hai Miaoli Project to create EDF Renewables' first floating wind farm in Taiwan."
