Taipower's Taichung Power Plant's Coal-Fired Units Retire After 36 Years; Demolition Set for Completion in Early 2029

Taichung Power Plant's coal-fired Units 1 & 2 were retired on Oct. 1 after ending operations on Sept. 30, marking the units' departure from Taiwan's power supply fleet. Taipower held a blessing ceremony on Oct. 7 to mark the start of a 28-month dismantling project, which is expected to be completed in early 2029. The company said it will prioritize occupational safety and environmental protection throughout the work.
The 2 units have a combined capacity of 1.1 GW and had served as major sources of electricity since entering operation in 1990. Over 36 years, they generated nearly 280 billion kWh in total, providing stable power to industries and households in central Taiwan. With new gas-fired units at the Taichung plant coming online, the retirement of the coal units marks another step in Taipower's efforts to reduce coal use and emissions while maintaining reliable power supply.
The dismantling project involves heavy equipment and high-altitude operations across the seawater pumping station, boiler and turbine buildings, and the 252-meter-high stack. Taipower said work will proceed concurrently across the different areas under strict safety and environmental requirements. The site will subsequently support the planned Taichung Power Plant Phase II New Gas Generator Project (台中電廠二期新建燃氣計畫).
