Hokkaido Governor Naomichi Suzuki (鈴木直道) expressed strong support for participating in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's (METI) public call for floating offshore wind power demonstration projects. In an interview with Nikkei, Suzuki said that Hokkaido "should respond proactively" to the initiative, with potential candidate areas including offshore waters near Hiyama in southern Hokkaido.

Suzuki emphasized that expanding renewable energy would not only contribute to decarbonization but also enhance Hokkaido's competitiveness in attracting data centers and developing demonstration sites for "Physical AI" technologies, including autonomous driving and robotics. He noted that the region's vast agricultural land, dairy farms, and cold climate provide favorable conditions for testing real-world AI applications.

The METI initiative, launched on July 15, aims to develop floating offshore wind technologies capable of operating in deep waters and challenging marine environments. Hokkaido's surrounding waters are considered suitable due to their severe wave conditions and geographical characteristics. Suzuki highlighted that a stable renewable power supply would become increasingly important in attracting large-scale data centers, while floating offshore wind could further expand Japan's renewable energy potential toward commercial deployment targeted for 2040.
