Dialog Between TAEDT and the Ministry of Environment (MOENV) Regarding Net-Zero Carbon Emissions and Environmental Sustainability
On August 9, the Taiwan Industry-Academia Technology Alliance for Energy Digital Transformation (TAEDT), led by Director Professor George Hsu and Secretary-General Dr. David Hsieh, visited the Ministry of Environment (MOENV) for perspectives exchange. Minister Peng Chi-Ming personally received the alliance representatives and listened to their recommendations regarding net-zero carbon emissions and environmental sustainability. The topics including domestic waste disposal, international carbon credit applications, strategies for promoting green certification, carbon management in traditional manufacturing industries, the application of AI and big data in flue gas emissions, and the role of digital twin technology in achieving the 2050 net-zero target.

The Carbon Pricing Advisory Committee held its fifth meeting this morning (September 9). In terms of rate planning, the preliminary recommendation is to set the general carbon price range between NT$300 and NT$500 per ton. It is also suggested that the rate be reviewed and adjusted in stages every two years.

Stephen Bull, CEO of Vårgrønn, expressed that the contract affirms the United Kingdom's confidence in their plan to develop Europe's largest floating offshore windfarm. Since the development of offshore wind in Taiwan, there have been multiple incidents requiring vessel and medical rescues at wind farms, underscoring the growing importance of ensuring the safety of wind farm personnel and equipment. In response to these challenges, the National Maritime Engineering Association (NMEA) organized a 2-day "2024 Offshore Wind Marine Salvage and Emergency Response Summit" on August 15 and 16. The summit was structured around four key themes: policy, industry, academia, and medical care. It aimed to collaboratively discuss and develop a disaster prevention and emergency response system tailored to Taiwan's unique geographical environment and the specific needs of its offshore wind power industry.

On September 3, local fishermen staged a large-scale maritime protest in the Wando sea area against the "Wando Geumil Offshore Wind Power Project" as construction began. The project, with a capacity of 600 MW and connected to the Wando Substation, is a major development by KEPCO's subsidiary, Korea Southeast Power. It involves installing 40 offshore wind turbines, each with a 15 MW capacity, in the southern sea of Geumil, Wando County, with a total investment of 3.2 trillion KRW.
