In response to concerns from the Legislative Yuan's KMT caucus regarding the extension of Mailiao Power Station Unit 1 due to power shortages, Taipower clarified that the extension was requested by the operator in May to compensate for power not delivered due to force majeure. This request is unrelated to the decommissioning of Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Unit 1, which was retired according to legal requirements. The decommissioned Maanshan NPP Unit 1 was planned to be replaced by the higher-capacity Fong Der Gas-fired Power Plant, ensuring an adequate power supply.

Taipower clarified that the Stationary Pollution Source Installation Operating Permit for Mailiao Power Station Units 1 & 2 was reduced by the Yunlin County Government in 2015, necessitating shutdowns or reduced operations, leading to incomplete power delivery during the contract period. The operator cited force majeure and requested to continue delivering the remaining power.

The Yunlin County Government indicated that Mailiao Power Station could continue operations if it meets legal conditions, as its operating permit is still valid. Taipower agreed to fulfill the original power delivery by the end of 2025.

Taipower mentioned that although some units are being decommissioned in the second half of this year's power supply, new units will be added to the grid. Maanshan NPP Unit 1 was decommissioned in July, with Fong Der Gas-fired Power Plant Unit 3 compensating. Mailiao Power Station Unit 2 will be decommissioned in September, but Datan Power Station Unit 9 will come online simultaneously. Datan Power Station Unit 7 and Hsinta Power Plant New Unit 1 will also come online in December.

The capacity of new units exceeds that of decommissioned units, ensuring no power shortages, with monthly supply surpassing peak load demand.
