EU Challenges Taiwan's Discriminatory Rules on Local Content regarding Offshore Wind Projects MOEA: Exploring Prospects for Opening Up
Jul. 28 2024 EU Challenges Taiwan's Discriminatory Rules on Local Content regarding Offshore Wind Projects MOEA: Exploring Prospects for Opening Up The EU (26th) has requested dispute settlement consultations at the WTO concerning Taiwan's use of local content criteria for offshore wind energy projects. The EU is committed to leading the global green transition and, as such, welcomes Taiwan's efforts to support green energy. However, such efforts must respect the global level playing field and comply with international trade rules. In the view of the EU, Taiwan's local content eligibility and award criteria in energy capacity allocation auctions for offshore wind farms are inconsistent with its WTO commitment to not discriminate against imported goods and services. -
Typhoon Gaemi Strikes: Taipower's 6,000 Staff Continuously Repairing and On Standby; Wind Power Output and Distributed Microgrid Effectiveness Highlighted
Jul. 26 2024 Typhoon Gaemi Strikes: Taipower's 6,000 Staff Continuously Repairing and On Standby; Wind Power Output and Distributed Microgrid Effectiveness Highlighted As Typhoon Gaemi made landfall, Taiwan experienced significant increases in wind speeds, reaching gusts of up to Force 8 to 10 along the western coastal areas. Taipower reported that at 12:36 PM on the 25th, instantaneous wind power output peaked at 2 million kW, although not breaking records, it constituted 7% to 8% of the total electricity generation, equivalent to the output of the Third Nuclear Power Plant. -
MOEA Minister J.W. Kuo Calls for Relaxation of Offshore Wind Localization Requirements Emphasizes Geothermal and Hydrogen Energy Development, and AI Engineer Training
Jul. 26 2024 MOEA Minister J.W. Kuo Calls for Relaxation of Offshore Wind Localization Requirements Emphasizes Geothermal and Hydrogen Energy Development, and AI Engineer Training In a recent local media interview, Minister J.W Guo of MOEA discussed Taiwan's energy development plans. Amid the country's entry into the Phase 3-2 (the zonal development) of offshore wind farm development, the inflationary impact triggered by the Russia-Ukraine conflict has intensified construction costs, prompting developers to urge the government to review localization policies. Originally, Phase 3-1 required a 60% localization ratio, but Phase 3-2 has allowed developers greater flexibility by adopting a fully elective approach, albeit still seen as insufficiently flexible by developers. -

Jul. 25 2024 OMNI Features|First Decline in EU Wood Pellet Sales in 2023.Korean Cable Manufacturer Taihan Launches Korea's First Offshore Wind CLV "Palos".German Company Neuruppin Completes Its First 500-Meter Geothermal Drilling Project According to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the EU's consumption of wood pellets decreased by 1.2% last year, reaching 24.5 million metric tons. This marks the first decline since 2015. The primary reasons for this decrease are the mild winter and reduced demand from the commercial power sector. The current low prices, combined with government incentives, are expected to support the widespread use of biomass for residential heating in 2024. It is anticipated that demand from the industrial power sector will remain stagnant this year. -
